Painting yellow

I’m getting ready to paint the nose cone on my 1/24 Stuka. The tip is yellow. Whats the best undercoat to use? Also, any other little tips for a nice uniform finish would be greatly appreciated.

While I have used Alclad Gray Primer & Microfiller successfully, it a light gray primer, I think I’m going to try some Tamiya white primer next.

I would try a flat yellow over a light grey primer. If you want to gloss it up just add a coat of future wax.
Currently I’m brushing everything with flat colors or semi glosses and glossing them up with future wax if they are to be shiny .

If your air brushing that’s a question for others here.
Just 2 cents from a 6 or 7 out of 10 kit builder, good luck, Bill.

I use Tamiya flat yellow very successfully from the airbrush, usually a light gray primer, or, if the base coat is NMF or a lighter color, no primer. Just use several (and I mean several!) mist coats until coverage is acheived, here is a mustang and my latest raiden, both yellow accents were done straight onto the NMF finishes with no primer.

Good luck…Steve

many light flat coats that go on very dry. thats the ticket to nice white/ellow coats. do make sure that the surface is primed or painted a light color, preferably white.

I lay down a coat of flat white, followed by a single coat of yellow. No worries!

I just finished some yellow this morning. I primed with Model Master medium gray cut 25% with lacquer thinner then two coats of thinned Testors flat yellow and got excellent color density.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I’m going to try the light gray primer with the light coats of yellow, airbrushed of course. This way I can control the intensity of the color. I want a more subdued effect on the color than a bright, automotive type yellow. Thanks again !

My favorite undercoat is flat white. I use Floquil Reefer White enamel.

I like to use Gunze Mr. BaseWhite 1000 under light/bright colors. It dries fast and goes on ultra-smooth. IMHO, a grey undercoat throws the color off a bit.

Yeah… I have the same problem with white and all next-to-white-colors… you can use a light grey undercoat… I use Humbrol 166… I think… I can’t remember the number, but it is a satin grey, and it works very well…

I use flat white as well for a undercoat before painting anything yellow .

I have had excellent results with all the Color of Eagles paints, which are simply military shades of Vellejo artists acryics in the squirt bottles. I’m hooked on this paint, and for Luftwaffe yellow, their RLM 04 Gelb covers beautifully over a thin light gray undercoat. I’ve taken to using their tire black, which is a tiny bit lighter than RLM 66 Schwarzgrau, for many things, including instrument panels and consoles, as well as a the main color for tires before lightening the area that contacts the runway.
And these paints come in nice size bottles for only about three dollars. Another one to try is their OD combined with their sunbleached OD color. It saves much hassle with mixing up a new bottle of paint to get the highlights or to sunbleach upper surfaces on an OD plane.
