I just recently discovered that they never painted Apaches (or at least operational ones, one of the prototypes was) painted OD Green. I never thought about it, but I just bought the Revell kit and the picture on it is OD and even the instructions say to use OD, which technically isn’t correct.
Surely Nato Black will be closer fit?
No, US Army Apaches are painted Helo Drab FS# 34031, not Olive Drab FS#34087. Most other US Army choppers have been using that same color since the early to mid 80’s when the switch was made. There are exceptions of course. The most well known being the various types in black flown by the 160th SOAR.
I’ll be buying a bottle of the Helo Drab FS# 34031 tomorrow. I have an Apache in my stash right now. I’m glad I saw this thread. Also about adding white to the base color. I thought about doing that on my UC-43 Traveler to make the O.D. look more correct…next time.
