Painting Tamiya's Panther G

I’m about to start the Panther, and I need some painting advice. I’m going to hand zim it, but I also want to make it look somewhat worn. I know I can chip off some of the zim, but what about painting? It seems to me that pre-shading the panel edges under the zim would be a waste of time. Extra painting over zim doesn’t seem like a good idea either. If it accurately portrays actual weathering, I’d like to really emphasize darker tones near the edges of the panels, and lighter toward the middle. Is that just a matter of using different colors for dry-brushing? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Thats a good question on how one should deal with painting Buff. I’m by no means experienced with painting over a zimmed surface but it seems logical that you would want to paint the entire tank, and then do your chipping of the zim so that thedamaged zim would show the initial paste color of the zim at the edges where it has been chipped or damaged. Also if the zim has been in a damaged state for any period of time then it would be appropriate to weather those edges. Thats just kind of my feel of how I would approach your delimma. I’m sure some of the folks with more experience will chime in and provide a better point of view. Hope this gives you some food for thought. Semper Fi, mike

Thanks, Mike. I hadn’t thought of that.

If it is a late model Panther G do not ZIMM it , if you wish to be accurate . Early AUSF G did have it in many cases . As far as shading the chipped zimmerit , I would go basecoat yellow or primer oxide red , most likely the latter as most zimmerit was applied over the primer then painted basecoat yellow or green respectively . So I would paint your yellow with camo then touch up the chipped areas with oxide red , then do the weathering .

Thanks, Spector. It’s an early G, so I’m safe with the zim. Thanks for tips on the paint. Just what I needed.
