I’m getting ready to put these guys together and I was wanting to pick your brains about the paint schemes, and what is the easiest way to go about painting the exterior of these models. Yes, I can read the instructions and do this on my own, but I wanted to hear from all of you.
What is the better paint?, Tamiya, Model Master, Gunze? I do have the humbrol paint reference wheel and I can use that, but I figured that I could come hear and get a straight forward answer very quick.
Let me hear your suggestions.
Thanks,
I presume your doing the Navy Tri color scheme on both birds? I like to start with the white bottoms (I like to add a touch of off-white), then do the intermediate blue side/under wing areas and finally the sea blue uppers. After seeing newsreels of production paint jobs and examining close up photos, I dont do any hard edge masking. Weathering varies from moderate to severe as most Navy and Marine Corps aircraft operated in harsh enviroments and were very exposed to the elements for most of the Pacific War.
Of the three brands you listed, I prefer Gunze for airbrushing, with MM a close second. I get the best results and the least problems using their paints for airbrushing aircraft camo schemes.
Whar markings do you have, plan to get for these kits?
out of box markings,on both. SDB-5 is Accurate Minatures, and F6F-3 is Hasagawa. I do have a photo etch from edwardo for F6F-3
more concerned about apply a good sound and accurate paint scheme.
I’d go with what Stikpusher says. If you don’t want to spray freehand, mask the areas off but leave a little distance between the mask and the surface to get that soft edge. I have good luch with MM, straight out of the bottle if it’s fresh. And Humbrol has some really fine pigments. They make the colors you need, also.
