Painting Prowler canopies in 1/700

I’m finally tackling the air wing for my USS Enterprise project, and splurged on the Trumpeter 1/700 EA-6B Prowlers (OK, OK, and the S-3s and the E2-Cs) and am stumped. I only have 6 of these, and a $1 each don’t want to screw up more than 1.

Any suggestions for getting the gold-tinted effect on the canopies, which is a hallmark of the Prowlers? I realize that these are really, really small, but since there is so much gray on the flight deck already, I trying for any little “spots of color” that I can.

You might try mixing Future with Tamiya acrylic transparent yellow. Use something small to mix it in and add one drop of each at a time until you get the color you want.

Gold paint followed by a black wash to tone it down? I’d recommend practicing on some scrap plastic first to figure out how you want to experiment.

What about Tamiya gold mixed with Tamiya smoke so the screen would tint but still reflect a little with the mettalic, I was going to try this technique on my 1:48 prowler so if you try it let me know how it looks.

I forgot one important point (shocking, I know) - these little guys are molded in clear styrene. I’ve tried a couple of things on the “bottom” of the fuselage under the canopy part, to see how it will look reflected up through it. Bear in mind that these are only about 1-inch long, so tinting or multiple coats is probably out of my ability range.

I would say try the idea I put forward but mist the coating on with your AB from a distance, this way you can do a single or multiple coats as required.
