Painting PE

For the BoB GB, I’m using a PE set for the cockpit. I’ve painted PE before, for straps, and not had a problem. This time there is a wider expanse of metal, and I’m using Xtracolor enams, rather than Humbrol enamel. I’m having a problem with coverage. No matter how much I paint (brush) the PE seems to remain the same colour! What am I doing wrong?

Osher Have you tried roughing up the surface of the PE before you paint, as this should allow the paint to adhere better, and therefore hopefully coat better. I use a fibreglass pencil, but a rub down with wet and dry would do the job.

You might also try dipping the PE in vinegar. Vinegar, being a mild acid will microscopicaly etch the surface, giving the paint something to grip. Just dip for a couple of minutes, and then rinse with cold running water. Let dry and then paint.

Thanks guys! I’m a bit worried about losing detail with some wet and dry, but the idea of vinegar sounds appealing, even if the smell doesn’t! [:D] I’ll try that next time.
