Painting Panzer Commanders

Hello All,

I have been working on a Panzer II and want to make the commander as realistic looking as possible (as we all do with our paint jobs I’m sure). I would like some help on primer - what color base coat should I use for the figure? Any advice would be helpful. I have fully researched the uniforms and have all the necessary colors.

Assuming you are going for the traditional black panzer wrap jacket uniform, primer would be black. If the head is already attached, no worries as I’ve actually seen works done with black used as a skin primer.

If it’s a camou style uniform, prime with the lightest colour. DAK - any desert or olive colour will do. HTH

I have had a lot of success using a very light coloured primer, usually the majority colour of the figure but the lightest , then turning the figure upside down and using a flat black , airbrushed onto the figure so that it settles into the undersides of the clothes etc. Shadows and high points highlighted in one job.

I use light gray Tamiya primer on all my figures.Basecoat, however is something different.If he is in black,then that is the color I basecoat in,if he is DAK then the it would be tan.

I paint dark to light so a dark grey or black primer works best for me…

Manny - it seems the eyes of the latter figures are more toned down than on the first photos - I sure like them better that way. The second photo from the end reminds me of the old German joke on the Nazis - the corn was growing up to -THIS- high [:D] Have a nice day

If I’m using hobby enamels, I rarely prime plastic figures. If I’m using acrylics, I use a light gray, sometimes a flat white.

I agree, I prefer in 1 in 35 scale to have what was described to me as a" Clint Eastwood squint" rather than poppy eyes. In the scale you wouldnt really be able to see the whites of their eyes, though I usually do paint in a Iris.

Thank you for all the help. I have usually stuck with 1/35th scale but the 1/48 is giving me some trouble adjusting. I can’t seem to get the skin tone and highlights right with the smaller figures. I appreciate all of the advice.
