Painting M-60 tracks

I’m pretty naive on modern armor, but Tiger Jr. and I are almost finished with his Tamiya M-60 w/ra, but the tracks confuse me a bit. They seem to be rubber padded. On the box, the entire track seems to be black. The connectors no doubt should be base color, but what about the metal that holds the pads? I made him wait until I get the skinny from you guys. [V] Thanks.

Check your Email . If you would like some color photos let me know. If you Email me I can reply with attchments.

Odd, TIgerman, but I was going to ask that very question!!

Thanks gjek, but I never received your email. In checking your profile you certainly seem to have had much experience with the M-60. I sent you my email address. Yes, if you could me some color photos that would be great, or better yet post them here, that way Jason can see them too.

Funny isn’t it Jason, how many people seem to ask others questions. Yeah, the box art I’m sure is misleading. I’m thinking base expcept for the pads, but I could be wrong.

I painted my M-60 tracks an earth color first, then used grimy black on the pads, sealed the tracks with dullcote and finished with a black wash on the metal links to tone down the earth color. I’m happy with the results, unfortunately I don’t have pictures. I got the inspiration to try painting the tracks this way by looking at some construction equipment.

The painting directions are sort of correct. When tracks come new, they are coated with a black tar-like preservative. It wears off fairly quickly and the bare metal shows through but remains covered with dust, mud, and a stained bare metal color.
The track pads are rubber, but hardly stay a true black color.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.

Rob, I assume the tar-like stuff is to keep them from rusting or wearing?

Thanks from me also!

Yeah, it is weird but this is definitely not the first time I went to post a question only to see it on page one. You guys following me around?

So would the connectors also have the black stuff on it too?

The preservative inhibits rust while tracks are transported or stored. After manufacturing or rebuild, tracks are stored outside or transported uncovered (except by sea).

Sounds easy enough. Did you use Tamiya Dark Earth?

Did every one who asked for photos get them? I hope I didn’t miss anyone. Greg.

Remember, the track pads are like the road wheels. They get chunks torn off of them and come off sometimes too. They don’t stay new looking for long.
