Painting Foil?

I’ve got to put some “Belly Bands” on an F-105 I’m building. They are basically steel straps that help support the weight of the centerline bombs and MER. I thought I’d use self-adhesive foil for that but I’ll need to paint it to match the fuselage.

I’m concerned about the paint adhering properly and wondered if anyone had tried painting over foil before. I guess it’s about like PE as far as adhesion goes, and I normally just use acrylic for that. In this case, though, the paint is mixed for a specific color and it’s enamel.

Scott, although I haven’t recently used foil on a model per se, I do use it to line my paint booth. The spray, overspray, and drips seem to adhere resonably well to the surface. I think I have the shiny side out which would probably have make the paint adhere less strongly. They don’t sound like areas that you’ll be handling a lot during post-painting assembly, so my guess would be that you won’t have any difficulties regardless of the paint used.

Scott,

Maybe wipe the foil first with lacquer thinner to remove any residue that may be there and I think it would work just fine.

Rough it up GENTLY with a fine grit sandpaper or brillow pad and clean with alcohol, etc. You should be OK

Thanks guys. I’ll give it a try tomorrow night if I can figure out what I did with my foil. Haven’t seen it for a couple of years

I appreciate the help and will let you know how it works out.
