I have some chrome plated parts I would like to paint a different color. How do I go about stripping off the plating? Or can I just paint over the top of it?
Chrome plating comes off fairly easy with oven cleaner. I’ve been using Easy Off Fume Free to do it recently. That way requires a bit more scrubbing with a toothbrush than if you use nail polish remover. If you use nail polish remover, you’ve gotta sit there with your parts, get the chrome scrubbed off, and get 'em out of it before they start to wrinkle.
I saw something recently about removing chrome with some household product, but I can’t remember what it was. Plain old Clorox bleach maybe, but I can’t remember for sure.
Mr. Clean works quite well. It doesn’t remove the clear underneath the chrome however. I’ve heard bleach can do both though.

The best way to remove chrome is to dip the part in straight ammonia. The stuff comes right off.
