Painting canopy windscreens

Many modern aircraft, such as the F-14A, have a windscreen that may be either clear blue or clear green. I would like to learn how best to paint these colors on my aircraft canopys. Thanks![:)][:)]

Hi There

I found that Tamiya do acrylic paints for painting onto clear plastic, that remain see through, I’ve used them for navigation lights on a 1/48th Mosquito, use them with an airbrush would be probably be best.

Good Luck

Well after seeing what Swanny tried on his site I been testing it myself. Take future floor wax and Tamiya clear color of your choice ( I mix my color a little strong) and dip your clear part.

I use MM Acryl Clear Blue and Clear Orange for canopy tinting. They’re self-leveling, and usually turn out really nice. Used the Orange on my F-16s, Blue on my F-14A and Green on my HH-65A Dolphin helo. All turned out well. Just make darn sure you let them set for at least 24 hours before masking (I’m speaking from a bad experience with the Dolphin).

Was that the Trumpeter kit? I am about 1/2 finished my Dolphin and got Tamiya smoke for the upper canopy color. Any problems getting the canopy halves to glue in right? I’ve test fitted one side a bit and am a little aprehensive as to them fitting together just right, I just don’t want to find a small gap or something AFTER they dry…

Thanks!

I use Tamiya Clear Green, thin it down and spray with the airbrush. Thin just enough to flow through the AB. Too thin and it just beads up. Sometimes I feel lucky and brush it on by hand. With 1/72 scale I can get away with it because the windscreen is so small in this scale.
