Painting and Overspraying Invasion Stripes?

Just about to begin painting the Accurate Miniatures F-6. It has the standard stripes on the underside, but recommends the upper stripes should be painted out as on the real aircraft they were hastily removed. To get an idea what I’m after, this is their publicity shot

The underside of the wings will be easy, but what’s the best way of doing the fuselage? I’ve done stripes before and just wrapping one bit of masking tape around doesn’t work as you end up with kinks (although I know the stripes were often rather crude on the real aircraft.) So I need to work out how to make level lines on the nose and fuselage. Secondly, how do I get the overpainted stripes look? I was thinking of airbrushing them as normal, then spraying with thinned Olive Drab. Any adivce much appriciated

Hey Alex…back in January I posted a technique for painting the stripes that a friend came up with…click on ‘search’…enter “A method for painting invasion stripes” in the keywords…and use my screen name in the user box and search in the ‘Aircraft’ forum.

Ok thanks, found the topic and it’s given me a good guide on how to paint the stripes. I did notice people using Tamiya 1/2 inch tape but that isn’t avaliable here, only 10mm and 16mm. Still not sure how I’d achieve the look over overpainting them with Oliver Drab though.

Overpainting is the easy part. Most people try to figure how to not overpaint parts of the builds.

Paint the stripes as normal and then just whip up a batch of olive drab and give the area few quick, light coats until you get the desired coverage.

I’ll wrap my model in paper towel to prevent overspray, taping it closed with masking tape. Another good way is to use Para Film to encase your model.

I submitted this tip to FSM a while back and it appeared in the magazine.

And don’t forget, many invasion stripe schemes were slapped on quickly with paint brushes in order to get them on in a hurry…and wind up with ragged edges. Research the Squadron you are building to…

And I figured you would get advice on covering with green camo…not my area to advise on that.
