I purchased the Eduard painted metal flag set for a 1/350 German Battleship.
I assumed instructions would be included showing how to appy them. In particular, how to deform the metal of the larger flags so they would look realistic when fixed to the flagpole.
Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, and google and yourtube searches turned up nothing either.
Does anyone have any good references on techniques for making painted metal flags look realistic?
Thank you!
Mark
Eduard’a PE is a bit robust and is often a bit difficult to pull this off, but this is what I do with sheet lead flags:
lay 3 or 4 straight pins on the table
place flag over pins so that the wave wrinkles appear as desired
Place 3 or 4 more pins over the flag so that they fall between the under pins
press down so the pins make a corrugated wave
adjust as necessary
I just submitted one of those new short writeups (forget what they are called) about making flags to FSM. Have no idea if they will accept it. It is for making flags from paper, not PE.
My approach is similar to EdGrune’s…I lay the part on one of those flat red rubber erasers, and use pin-nails to ‘roll’ the desired curves into the flag. Go gently…the prepainted finish tends to want to flake off if you get too vigorous.
Hi Mark!
What I do with those is this. If its at sea and doing say Eighteen knots is I shape them over pins in a confused pattern. If she’s (the Ship) at rest, I use Bamboo skewers and shape over that .For the shaping part on the top I use one of those chisel shaped Pencil replacement erasers. I push gently and it doesnt cause the paint to chip. Then I put a coat of flat Paint on a brush(Not much now) and they hold up well.
