Hi… tested for the first time the painted national insignia using the 1Man Army maskings on my 1/32 Tamiya Corsair… very nice overall look but I am having some edge issues, i.e. they are not fully flush with the underlying surface, as can be seen on the pictures. What is the best way (if any) to fix this issue ?
Thanks
Ezio
Hey Cing!
Mmmm.. Could you possibly use a tooth pick? Shape the tooth pick into a sharp point, and lightly go over the exposed white?
Almost like scratching a lottery ticket, just go back in forth along the edges or..
Take a 900 or a 1000 grit sand paper or pad and again lightly sand over the edges?
At the moment, these are the only two options that I came up with off the top of my head.
I normally work with decals but I will be doing an F-18 GB that I’ll be making my own stencil masks so that ought to be fun.
Outside of the faint white edges, the star looks really good.
Happy Modeling,
Mike
I like Butz’s suggestions of toothpick or high grit sandpaper to knock down that edging. I’ll add that if you happen to have a paint mule laying around, if you can re-use one of these masks to duplicate and then test the toothpick/sandpaper on it before attacking your otherwise great looking Corsair.
Can you perhaps explain the process you used to get this result? How many coats of paint? How many masking layers?
There doesn’t seem to be a height difference between the white and blue, but the whole marking seems very thick, almost like a sticker applied to the plane. I’m thinking you did white first and either needed many coats to create opacity or put the white on too thickly, causing it to build up along the outside edges of the mask.
If it’s just the edges that are built up, then light sanding around the edges may work. You might have to get through the blue to level the white, then reapply the blue. If it’s the whole thing, then it’s more work with sanding it all down and redoing.
Yes, I believe the problem is that I needed many passes of white to get the right opacity… they were extremely light coats but I believe this has been the cause of the problem
