Paint spatter around edges

I airbrush with a Paasche H, thin MM enamel three parts paint to one part thinner and get spatter around the edges. Since this is normally a sign the pressure is too low or paint too thick what is the problem even when I still get it with increased pressure?

I usually thin 1:1 MM enamel and thinner. I believe the paint is not thin enough.

Thanks for your reply, but I thin the paint according to the ratios FSMprovides. The paints are a little cold being in a 45 degree or so environment.

Paint doesn’t like to be applied cold or to a cold surface. If you can get the model and the paint to 60 degrees or more, you’ll probably have better results. I’ve also found that a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio works better for MM enamels.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I have to agree with the other guys, in my experience MM can be really thinned, I also go as high as 1:1 if needed.

Colder air indeed does not aid paint application with an airbrush, the flow, the spray pattern and the risk of runs due to slower set up are problems that can be encountered.

Some say higher pressure can assist in reduction of spatter at edges. Seems like my better fine line results are to be had at 18-25 psi.

Also consider that such spatter can be due to a bad cleaning session- some paint residue left on needle or nozzle.

I agree that a perfectly clean airbrush at 25 -30 psi close to the model at normal 70 degree room temperature thinned 1:1 would be ideal. 45 degrees is too cold for ant painting. it will not flow, settle or dry properly.
