Hello:
Starting a Revell 1:32 P-38. Recommendations for a “natural metal” finish?
Thanks,
wikksmith
There’s some phenominal modelers here, but a duffer’s perspective is this: For airbrushing, I’ve had very passable results with Model Master burnishing aluminum. For large areas - ie, entire airplanes, I’ve even had pretty good luck with the spray cans.
Two caveats: wash your model w/ detergent and rinse it good before you paint, and burnish it thoroughly. It won’t stick worth a darn on an oily surface, and if you don’t burnish it well, decals and subsequent coats will look like poop.
2nd choice: Floquil’s old silver.
My most unfavorite, can’t-stand-the-stuff-keep-it-off-my-bench: Tamiya acrylic aluminum. Yeah, I know that cussing acrylics is heresy, but I’ve never had any luck with the stuff.
The others here can give you the scoop on foil and other metal finishes.
Good luck!
Wess
Alclad ll - You can’t beat it!
LOL

Your other choices besides House hold Alum. Foil and/or Bare Metal Foil
is SnJ paint or Alcad II paint both are superior products and relatively easy for first time users.
Another vote for Alclad2. Best BMF you can get with an AB.
Regards, Rick
I third Alclad. Alclad 2 is easy to use, easy to clean up, and produces a metal finish that looks great.
Or railroad colors, Floquil Old Silver and/or Platinum Mist.
Alclad2
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!
One more question: if I go with the Alclad, what do I put over the decals?

OK! Thanks!
Yet another Alclad vote. It was between the Alclad and SnJ and the LHS owner told me I couldn’t go wrong with Alclad. I’ve seen others work nicely with Floquil’s Old Silver though.
