The instructions in this Tamiya kit call for TS 46 light sand but I seem to recall somewhere on the forums that this colour may have been a bit off. I mostly do WW ll armour so I don’t have this colour in my inventory. How close is it to Dunkelgelb? (Tamiya Dark yellow) Any other suggestions? I am doing the ODS Bradley at the same time so I assume I can use the same colours. Thoughts? Thanks guys.
Many of the folks in the community have said Model Master Acryl “Gulf War US Army and Marine” sand is a close match. Just working from memory I think it’s a bit pale, but like I said, I’m working from memory. Many of the folks that approve of this color have been over there recently.
Thanks Spamicus, time to warm up the credit card and buy a gallon…
Best out of the bottle match for modern CARC sand is Testors Model Master Sand FS #33531, not Army/Marine Gulf Sand. It is too dark. The Sand matches perfectly to vehicles I have served on stateside and in Iraq.
DONT use Dukelgelb… that will be too pea-green-ish
I used XF-60 Dark Yellow on mine. The next OIF vehicle I may try XF-59 Desert Yellow or one of the colors listed above.

i guess is not advisable to use XF-60 due to it is a different colour for world war 2 i guess … but nice for weathering use… XF-59 too dark … i am using XF-57 BUFF … u can try … our judgement in colour is different … what u see the best go ahead try it … it also depend on sunset and mid afternoon … when u can see photo seen that sunset photo of those vehicle is look like a bit of desert yellow still a but look like buff … but mid day it look like XF-55
You could use our US Gulf War Sand Tan (FS 33446), in our Colourcoats enamels range. Order item ARUS 01. No minimum order, and we ship worldwide.

Oh wouldn’t you know that I just found a bottle of that in my tray but I used Xf-60 because I thought that was the best I had [:(] I brushed a test of the Gulf War color on paper and it looks great.
I also used it on the Hummer [xx(]
Oh well… there’s always NEXT TIME [:)]
just so you don’t limit yourself to all tan tracks ( any tracked vehicle ) most units in the states are tan, but those of us in europe like 1st AD and 1st ID and whatnot , have woodland camo tracks and trucks with some exceptions of course. OIF II been there done that.
Redleg,
Actually, all M1A2s are sand. 1AD and 1ID don’t have A2s, only M1A1 versions. All M1A2s went to 3 Corps units, ie. 1CAV, 4ID, 3ACR, and a few to 3ID (I believe only Div Cav, 3-7CAV have them). Not many, if any, M1A2’s in 3-color NATO camo out there.
Arty,
Is there a link that shows the breakdown of what you are talking about? Or is this something that you just know?
true, if we did have any of the A2’s they were from when a local tank of ours was nocked out or broke down and they picked up a new one from kuwait. I know they did that with the brads as well, none of our guns crapped out on us though! ( still haven’t heard if we won the Knox award yet? )
From my foxhole, we only had a few tan vehicles, most of which were either painted the wrong color in the paint shop here in europe or somehow made it through the system tan as a replacement. Third Corps had the tan stuff for the most part. When we finally got our 1114s from pre-po stock in kuwait, they were tan .
Dunkelgelb is too green. The CARC color is more yellow than that. I think buff would be too light. You might want to try MM Gulf war sand, from the color scale it looks good.
I remember we painted our equipment ourselves during ODS. We used a local purchased latex. So there is more freedom there.
The woodland painted equipment showed alot of weathering. The paint looked like it almost greyed with the amount of dirt that got into the texture of the paint. Even after it came of the wash racks in Kuwait, it still had that greyed look.
No referances that I know of. This is just knowledge I have from being in these units for the last 11 years. Personal knowledge.
Gino is right, the MM sand is the all out closest match to the vehicles that I worked with while in the “box.” For color variation you could use the MM gulf sand on replacement parts, or even better is to use the nato green for replacement parts.
