Paint by Number

I need a fool proof way to mask and paint the control panels on Academy’s 1/32 Hornet… I’ve laid down the gray base, but need a way to get the black on the dials, screens and buttons. It’s too small to mask with tape, too big to dry brush and I don’t trust my nerves enough for free-hand.

HEY,
Toothpicks my friend.

You might try spraying black paint on a piece of blank decal film, carefully measuring the screens and dials, cutting the film to fit with a sharp #11 blade and a hole punch for the dials. Apply as normal decals with a setting solution to help them settle down on the dials. At least that is how I’d do it. Good luck.

For instruments with a raised edge around them I used relatively thin paint and put a small drop right in the center of the instrument. The paint will flow out to the raised edges very nicely. For everything else I use a small brush and lots of patience. Where I mess up, I let things dry and go back with the base coat color to clean up the lines.
