First time poster here at FSM. I build mostly automotive models but I like to take a break from time to time.
A near future project is a 1/72 NA P51C mustang as flown by the Tuskagee Airmen in WW2. My question is: Were their Mustangs natural metal or painted silver?
Pretty much every Mustang that left the factory without camo had a natural metal fuselage and tailplanes with wings finished almost completely in duraluminum. Also, if you want to model a Mustang accurately most of the panel lines in the wings would have to be filled in, but that’s a matter of preference and a whole other story… [:p]
If you have access to Squadron’s In Action on the Mustang there is a factory shot of some D’s with wings painted in primer before being sprayed silver. They had fabric covered rudders and and the earlier ones had fabric covered elevators. The ones in the picture appear to be aluminum. So natural aluminum fuselage and painted wings and tail feathers. Note the flaps and ailerons are natural aluminum.
looks like the guys have got you covered Johnnai, but welcome to the forums anyway.

be sure to post some pics of your mustang when finished if you can!
