P51C Canopy

Hi all,
I am about to finish a 1/48 scale P51C that came with the Malcomb canopy(sic). I wanted to know if this canopy opens to the side as I haven’t seen many models with this type canopy. I will have to cut it from front part but want to make sure when I display it that the canopy is in the right position. I don’t see any canopy slider on the model that would indicate the canopy would slide back. Thanks for any help and info.

The Malcom Hood canopy on the P-51C slid back, similar to the later P-51D bubble tops, while the framed canopy opened to the side. The kit doesn’t include rails, but it’s designed for the canopy to be closed. The real AC were modified to accept the rails & the radio mast had to be removed to avoid interference with the canopy. The radio mast was replaced with a whip antennae.

Thanks for the info, I will work on it as you indicate and see how it comes out. I sure was confused on it as the kit (ICM) came with both type of canopies and I want to use the one that slides back. I have a little cutting to do as the canopy is one part (front part and the aft). Thanks again and have a great day.

Before you cut, check to make sure the kit canopy will slide back properly. Most kit canopies are too thick & have to be replaced with vac forms.

Roger that, I wanted to show it open as I painted the inside and did the usual dial painting and such. If I don’t cut I’ll just sit the canopy in position and show the inside when I want someone to see it. A little white glue works great and I don’t have to worry about messing it up too bad. Thanks again for all.
