P/F 80 Zinc Chromate Question...Yellow or Green?

…Or neither…seen a few of them with bare metal gear doors. Just want to get the “innards” the right shade of zinc chromate.

I hear ya…Im building the re-released Monogram kit and the instructions are saying everything is zinc chromate. I googled and didnt find any good color pics of the inside and what I did see on a few was the inside of the gear doors were natural metal. What a PITA! Now if I knew what color to paint the pit Id be in OK shape with tting started.

They were zinc chromate green. After 1952 they were left unpainted. Aircraft going through DEPOT after 1952 had the paint removed.

Thanks berny…just to be perfectly clear…wheel wells , gear doors and framework are all chromate green? I have a lot of work ahead of me with this kit…has a removeable tail section to expose the engine and some dry-fitting exposed some serious fit issues!

The ones I have done all called for Green Zinc Chromate.

Don’t bother… Either display it with the tail on the stand, or on the plane… You’ll never get it to do both… The clips that hold it in place are also a major part of what keeps it from fitting properly…The engine itself causes some fit problems too…

On mine, I left the engine out and used only the tail-pipe and a baffle.

You can get it to fit. It just takes a lot of sanding and reshaping. I have one here I am waiting on decals for that’s otherwise finished. But you are right,it was a very bad design decision by Monogram. And honestly, the engine isn’t all that great looking. I think the only good kit I have seen where it’s worth it to have this function working is the Fujimi F-86D. It has a fully removable engine that is highly detailed, and the back end is well fit.

I hear ya Hans…I was thinking about doing a dio with the engine sticking out but dont really have room for one. Probably build it with the tail on and chuck the engine in the spares box. Thanks for the heads up but I knew this was big trouble during my dry -fit session. May give er one more shot with your advice ringing in my ears…Don Hammerleoni…lol…

Here’s one of my main F-80/T-33 reference-sites… Shows mostly Green ZC… The rest is unpainted.

Well, that’s just the thing, Sparrow-Man… You can, sure… But it takes so much so that it won’t just “Snap on, snap off” and still fit tightly without re-engineering… The real F-80/T-33 tail-section was kept on with bolts through a pair of internal flanges, not two little clips… The kit’s engineered to be a toy in that manner, not a scale model…

And I concurr with that, Monogram dropped the ball here…

The F-80 kit’s fit just too clunky for the kind of precision fit to be feasible without a major re-work of both sub-assemblies… It’d require (at least the way I’m picturing it in my head) the same kind of attachment with micro-screws through a set of flanges with tapped holes, in order to “draw” the two parts together tightly…

It’s just not practical in 1/48th scale… Even if it were, it’d take a lot of handling of the completed modeleach time you wanted to change it, with all the associated dropping/damaging/wear & tear hazards that go along with that operation…

Well, that’s a matter of perspective… IMNSHO, it can be made to be a great-looking mill, with the proper amount of TLC (and Greeblies from the well-stocked parts-bin) applied by the typical “Monogram Gizmologist”…

Well TM… That’s the nature of “La Monogram Cosa Nostra”, “Our Monogram Thing”… You don’t EVER get out…Until you get PUT out…

A dio would fit OK on an 8 x 10 photo-frame (better on an 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 document frame, and perfect on an 11 x 14 photo-frame)…
