P-51D wing color NMF

So, I am having an issue on resolving the color of the panels for a P-51D. Is it the same color as the rest of the aircraft (Aluminum?) or is it silver or some form of gray lacquer? I’ve seen a number of instructions that call for straight aluminum to silver and some builds have it as some form of gray. any help would be appreciated.

When I’ve built NMF Mustangs, I have tended to paint the base aluminum. Then pick out certain panels, like the gun bay panels on the wings’ upper surfaces, or the two panels immediately in front of the intake on the lower surfaces, with a dark aluminum. Control surfaces will generally get white aluminum.

I am certain that I’ve read about some Mustangs with a gray lacquer on the wings to aid in efficient airflow, but I’ve never done one like that.

Yeah, that is what I was reading. I might just go with aluminum and not stress it. Thanks for the answer.

I agree with Steven! The main wings had some of the panel lines towards the leading edged of the wing filled in with putty which created a laminar flow wing.
So the wings would have been painted aluminum while other sections had a polished toned effect.
