I’m doing a P-51D for the USAAF GB. I have a decal sheet with Miss Marilyn on it. The stripe below the OD is yellow in the instructions which I have to paint. But I have seen pictures where the stripe is red. WHich is right? Thanks JOHN
John,
Give me till the morning,my wife is sleeping. I have a couple of photos as well as a
copy of Warbirds which contained an article of this aircraft but also about the 55th
fighter group markings. I do think it was red

Hey TJ,
From all the references material I have one this ship, the stripe appears to be that of a darker shade…
Checking more closely on the 55ths website and yes some restored(even though they are not 100% accurate) Stangs, the stripe is Red…
Hope that this helps and lookin forward to seeing your build
Flaps up,

Thanks Frank and Mike. I wanted to be as historically correct as possible. I think the red will look better anyway with the yellow rudder and yellow and green checked nose.
John,
I checked with several sources and I would go with red stripes on the side. As for the top
I read in the article of Warbirds Maj Gen Edward Geller said that they had "in stock in the paint
locker -namely camouflage green , red and yellow." . I hope this helps .

PS the same article mentioned that the “camouflage green” was from RAF stocks !!
