P-51D in 1/24th scale

Hi I’m new to the forum and I’m getting my research together to build the 1/24th scale Airfix P-51D. As you are aware this kit is OK but needs help. I want to do some detailing of the RR/Packard Merlin to start. I have some decent references but the photos don’t show electrical lines, hydralic, lines, etc to good effect. Does anyone out there have or know of some decent diagrams or photos? Thnaks and I’m glad to be here.

Hi David and welcome, i dont know if there are any engine shots on this site but this may help. www.p51.mustangsmustangs.com
Hope this helps.

When I built that kit I borrowed the Squadron book from a friend. You won’t find much better. I didn’t bother much with the engine, the cowlings are a lousy fit so they got sealed up. The wheel wells turned out nicely detailed in the end, and I fitted a second seat to make mine a Reno Racer. I got the race numbers ‘20’ from a giveaway in scale auto modeler a few years ago. Drop me an email if you need help.

[#welcome] my friend!

Hello david, welcome!

I’m going to suggest an expansive solution… If you really want some good engine detail and if you want the best 1:24 around try the trumpeter kit.
It is on sale at hlj.com check it out:

http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?TRP02401

It’s pricey, without the “sale” and still pricy when calculating the shippment cost.
You get clear engine panel, all moveable surfaces are movable, three resin figures, rubber tyres, etc…

If you can afford it enjoy it! if not stick to good o’ll airfix

The best reference I found is the Warbird Tec book on the P-51 or the Aero Detail series out of japan. There are also a few books out there just on different engines such as the Allied aircraft piston engines book by Graham White. It’s about $60.00.
