P-51A

Were the wheel wells on these guys aluminum or interior green? I can’t seem to find a definitive answer.

-Thanks.

As far as I know the A and B model wheel wells were primered AKA interior green. Later on the during the D models they stopped primering the wheel wells to speed up production. Though I have seen alot of pictures where the main landing gear doors were primered and the center left bare metal. If you are doing a specific plane and have photos look for these type of details. If not finding similar models can help. Hope this is usefull to you.

IPMSStockholm has a review of the AM P-51A kit, and the gentleman painted his wheel wells green. Also found a picture of a restored museum P-51A. As Soulcrusher said, the well appears to be interior green with the center of the interior door left bare metal.

I have this walkaround that I went by and they are green. But in the instructions in my kit as well as several other sources say that most were aluminum with a green main spar ( the back wall of the well). I painted mine all green and I think it looks alright even though it may not be accurate.

Detail and Scale says that they were painted zinc chromate green. The pictures seem to bear that out. There was a piece of sheet metal across the main gear doors that was left natural aluminum some times.

Thanks guys. Looks like it will be painted zinc chromate then.
