P-47D Thunderbolt by Tamiya

I finally finished my P-47D by Tamiya! The assembly was a Tamiya breeze. Fit was almost perfect. I used the Eduard PE set. I also decided to go for the Lt. Frank Klibbe livery as it was the more colorful of the two versions. I painted the white lines inside and outside the cowling and on the rudder.

Nice clean assembly and paint job, Constructor. Why did you weather the underside but not the uppersurface - or did you actually weather the uppersurfaces, but it didn’t show up against the darkish shade of Olive Drab you’ve chosen?

Very nice job, I may have to pick up that kit.[tup] Don’t think I’ve ever seen the national insignia on both sides of the bottom wing before.

Thanks for the post Chris. You are right, I did weather the upper surfaces but the weathering showed more on the lighter grey undersurface. I do not really weather my build much. Just shades of blacks.

Constructor - yoou might try using a lighter shade of OD. Even in northern Europe, the colour tended to fade when exposed to sun and rain. Adding greys and tans to Tamiya OD helps, because it’s quite a dark shade otherwise. The basic shade here:

is Humbrol 155, pre-shaded in black, and let down in the centres of panels by adding light tan shades.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a try on my next build. My problem with my painting is that the color looks alright before glossing it over but then it becomes darker ater spraying gloss which is the natural behavior of colors. They became darker because gloss intensifies the shade. I will make allowances next time.

Nice build. Looks great. If you’re having a problem with the paint darkening after gloss coating, try to lighten the paint first. Maybe try 10% white added to the base color.
