I am about to start building a P-47 for a pilot who wrecked four of them in WWII ( the joke is, if he had wrecked one more he would have been a German ace). The trouble is, the planes he flew had dorsal fins (not razorbacks) and I cannot find a kit that has a dorsal fin on it unless it’s a P-47N. I want to build it in 1/48 or 1/32. Help!
Dave,
Some thin sheet styrene should make it easy for you to scratch-build the missing fillet on the vertical stabilizer. From what I remember reading, many of the fillets were attached in the field by the groundcrews, so you would be duplicating what they did by scratch-building it. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!
Hello,
I have no skills to solve your prob, but I’m just curious about the pilot… Do you have any links about him???
Thanks,
Pisis
Hasegawa offers a 1/48 P-47D with the dorsal fin as an add on optional part. I keep waiting for Tamiya to offer one as well, as their Bubbletop was obviously designed to add that option, but so far not to be.

Yes, the Hasegawa 1/48 kit has all the parts you need. You might pcik up their P-47M model; I believe it’s externally indistiguishable from a late-model D with dirsal.
Hey guys, Thanks! I’d been looking for a -30 also for Mexico’s 201Squadron! I got the Aztec decal sheet a while back.
If you’re not able to get your hands on a Hasegawa kit, you can add the fillet to any other model rather easily. Just to prove that it can be done, here’s an old Monogram Jug…

Do you have any other information on this fella, Dave? I’d be most interested in learning more about him as I’m sure would others here on the forum.

Come to think of it, I did the same - made an M out of the Monogram D:
Blackwolf, did you do your own nose art? That really is nice! - Calvin
One of the releases of the Hasegawa 1/48 bubbletop is for a “P-47D30/40” and has all of the makings for a D-30:
outboard landing light
dive brakes
dorsal fin (retrofit on D-30s, standard on D-40)
Thanks, guy. Yes, that’s handpainted, although 'twas done over a decal. I used Superscale decals on this model and their nose art is pretty pathetic more often than not, with this one being a particularly bad example.
Thanks again!

Guys,
Don’t forget to use the proper propeller for the D/30!
Steve
Thanks for the info on the dorsal fin for the Hasegawa P-47D-30/40. This kit is apparently no longer in production. Any help on how I can find one?
Also, I found a set of decals for the Hasegawa kit for the 362nd F.G. Guess which group my P-47 pilot was in? Unbelievable.
The kit may be temporarily OOP, but there should be plenty around. I’m pretty sure my LHS has a couple of them. It will certainly be re-issued as it’s one of Hasegawas more popular kits. You could also go with the M kit as it isn’t that much different.
Regards, Rick
Rick:
What is an “LHS”? If you can locate one of these I’d sure appreciate it and am willing to pay well for a complete kit. I don’t care if it has been opened.
The dorsal fin on the M has a blunt front end and I think a is little taller than the one I’m looking for. The guy I’m building it for has too many pictures for me to cheat on accuracy and he’s a good friend.
