Here’s some pics of my 1/48 P-47 cockpit from aires. It’s gonna be stuck in the academy -D model. It was painted with Tamiya XF-13 J.A Green overall then given a wash and drybrush. The 'pit is designed for the hasegawa kit so I don’t know what sort of problems I’m gonna run into fitting it. It doesn’t look like it’ll be too bad though.
The panel is resin, PE, and film dials, the yellow strip is decal about 3 quarters of a poofteenth wide (the poofteenth is an Australian technical measurement equal to about half a bees dick.)
port side cockpit, the control stick is the only kit part,
starboard side, the seat is resin with PE seat belts,
Thanks for having a look and letting me share my build with you.
Leon - The throttle quadrant was a bit of a PIA. Those little controls were tiny. There is supposed to be another large throttle lever, but I knocked it off when I was putting it all together. Apart from that, the only problem was that the right hand sidewall was to long and didn’t fit properly.
Great 'pit, Ping. Now, am I to understand that a poofteenth is equivalent to 10 froghairs in width? Or vice-versa? And is it my monitor, or is that otherwise beautiful panel not JA green, but rusty brown? Every other photo is green. And, did you punch out the dials separately?
Tom
Tom - Yeah I’d say 10 frog hairs would approximately equal to a poofteenth. I’d have to check my technical measurements book to be sure though. The panel is actually flat black, but the photo gives it a bit of a brown colour (I’ll have to set the cameras white balance a bit better next time). The dials weren’t punched out seperately, they come as a sheet that you stick the PE panel to, you just have to line them up with the holes.
Then you did an excellent job of lining. I’m really not happy with the result of been getting from my PE panels with the film backing. It still looks two-dimensional to me. I remember the first one I did in 1987 (Verlinden) for a F-15A (Hasegawa). I thought at the time “The state of the art can’t get better than this.” Well, for Verlinden, it pretty much hasn’t, only the product line has expanded as have the prices. But I think what’s missing is more relief with the bezels and I guess I’m going back to my old friends at Waldron and get me some bezels to add to PE panels so the dials will be “deeper” in the instruments.
