Actually, this may be classified more as a “is Academy’s info reputable?” sort of a question.
Building a P-47D in a non-NMF, Academy’s instructions very specifically are calling for FS34092 (medium green) as opposed to the FS34084 (olive drab) listed on IPMS Stockholm. [However, they do list the ordinance as being painted OD.]
Anybody know for sure the “official” topside color of a P-47? I’m leaning towards believing Urban’s Color Charts, but these instructions are messing with my head. [:(!]
Here is a site that will tell you more than you want to know about the Beautiful Bolt. Just click the forums link and have fun. Maybe you’ll even stay a while [#toast]
What people seem to forget is that for one reason or another, various aircraft were painted in “unofficial” paint scemes during the war. When the 9th Air Force was moved to forward bases on the Continent following D day, they were ordered to camoflage the uppers of their NMF aircraft. Quite a few P-47s, P-51s and B-26s had their uppers painted with Medium Green 42 in lieu of OD.
Paul - very cool link, didn’t know that site existed…will definitely have to spend some time poking around over there!
Quincy - you raise a very good point. I’ll have to attempt some research on the actual bird represented by the decals and see if I can find any additional info. Perhaps Academy actually got their number right!
