P-47 in Normandy

From the info I’ve found so far, the P-47 was used in the Normandy campaign. I am currently building the Tamiya 1/48 Bubbleltop version and would like to pattern it after one of the aircraft involved. The kit decals include markings for aircraft flown out of Duxford or Mount Farm air bases in 1944. Would either of these aircraft qualify? If not, are decals available for a Normandy involved aircraft. I’ve already checked Two Bobs, ARC and Google and have come up empty handed.

Thanks.

cwalker3 - Aircraft participating in the Normandy campaign carried the black and white “Invasion Stripes”. These were applied at the time of the invasion and the short time to do them made for some crude applications. Gradually the “Invasion Stripes” were removed after the Norandy Invasion as they became a great recognizition mark for German AA gunners.

Note: Heavy bombers wouldn’t carry them, but medium bombers did as they participated in low level raids. Escort fighters for the heavies carried them as they often did other tasks for the invasion as well.

Others here have would probably have more inforamtion on the subject.

Check this web site, for the 78th Fighter Group based at Duxford, which had the 82nd, 83rd, and 84th Fighter Squadrons. They were equipped with both the P-51 and P-47 at the time of the Normandy invasion.
