Given the amount of Jug lovers on here, i am sure i will get some help with this. I have just bought a set of 72nd decals which include markings for a P-47C. But the only kits i can find are 47D Razorbacks. Is there any major difefrence between the two. Its a toss up between the Academy and the Tamiya kits. I already have a couple of the academy kits which look nice and are a lot cheaper. But if the tamiya kit is more sutable i would go for that one.
So, any advice.
From what I have read, the C model was 6 or 8 inches shorter than the D model. The added length on the D was between the cowl and the cockpit.
Thanks. I conervted that to metric and at that scale its about 2.7mm. I think i can get away with that. I take it that means theres an internal change to the engine which increases the length.
Here is an example of a conversion to a C model. It is of a 1/48 kit but the conversion work would be the same.

My references do not support this. Most differences were internal. There main visual differences were the addition of lower cowl flaps on the D to assist in engine cooling. The length increase difference was betwee the B and the C.

You’re very welcome Bish. In 1/72 it should be a piece of cake. Fill a couple lines and your set. Jus take note that some P-47s later had notched lower cowl flaps so you may have to do a tad more than just filling some lines depending upon your kit.
Thnaks stilk, i will make a note of that for when the time comes. I have saved the link borg gave me.The aircraft i have markings for is a war weary 47 used as a lead ship by one of the bomb groups. So i should be able to find some photos of the aircraft so i can check there. I think i am going to go with the Academy kit, its a good kit and seems silly to pay nearly 3 time more for the Tamiya.
Bish, Stikpusher is right about the demensions on the Thunderbolt. That is what I get for trying to remember instead looking it up. As soon as I read about the cowl flaps I knew that I had given you wrong info. Hopefully I did not screw up your kit.
Nope, not at all. I don’t even have a kit yet, just the decals. It will be a very long time before i build it. Even if the length was different by that amount, i would not have changed it as it is so minor in this scale it would be unnoticeable.
