Hi all, can someone please tell me if the access pannel (camera bay maybe?) in the pixc of my Trump 1/32 P-40b stands proud from the rest of the fuse or is it flush??
I can see that a decal or even a mask for the roundal might deform if I try to place it over the “step” on the pannel.
Any good P-40 walk around sites maybe ??
I plan to do a South African Air Force DAF plane flown by 5 Sqn.

I believe that is the radio compartment hatch. Here are a couple walkarounds

Any idea if the P-50B had the canvas linings insode the wheelwells? I see the kit shows the internal stiffner ribs of the top wing skin but no canvas.
It seems I will have to paint on the decals for this plane, so I am in for an “interesting” time!

As to canvas in the wheelwells, here is a visual feast for the eyes- P-40B/Cs on the assembly line in WWII living color. Yes they were installed at teh factory, but likely could be removed and left off as needed by ground crews.

I have found a place in the UK that sells masks for the P-40b, so I will get those and not even attempt to make them myself!
My sanity (although limited;-) ) is worth more than 10 US$ LOL.

The panel is flush on the real bird. Not sure why Trumpy did it that way…
Yeah, it’s definetly flush on the real ones. I’d put tape around the hatch and try to sand it flush if it were me.
While were on the subject, does anyone know what the blue lights, if they are lights, are on the fuselage below the cockpit? Are they supposed to be formation lights? I think they were deleted after the P-40B.

I hand painted some of the internal pieces with RAF Internal green. Strange thet it is lighter than the USAAF planes…maybe a different speck during painting? Were the planes made per order for the RAF or were planes that were built for the US taken over?
As for the markings, I al looking at either eagle strike decal set of the mask set that come from Poland. I habve not sprayed roundals on with masks yet, what would you guys sugest?

i am working the same kit. i echo the above. the hatch is flush. for mine i actually opened the hole and will be using aluminum as the hatch in the open position.
the lights are formation lights.

Joe, how far is your build? Any fit issues or stuff I need to look out for?

theuns the only fit issues are ones i am causing. the only issues with the trump kit seem to be with the pit. it is far too shallow. as for me i am adding a ton to it. i do have this one posted http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/157335.aspx remembering i classify myself as a beginner as far as builders go.

I will be going for a simple out the box build, but AM paint masks.

After assembling the cockpit I see what you mean about it being very shallow…what a pity! I thought it could build up well without AM parts

theuns it can build up very well oob. any model can. it is all up to you as to what you want to do to it.

Joe, I will try to make it look a little less “plastic” as best I can. I am mainly using this and the 1/32 Trump F4-u as stepping stones to my 1/32 WnW SE5 and my ultimate jewel in the stach , Tamiya 1/32 P-51 !
If Iearn a bit on every build to not stuff up my “super builds” I have succeeded

i hear that. the hawk i have going is going to be to most indepth i have ever done. my main goal is to do it justice.

Theuns, since you are doing an RAF Tomahawk, there is plenty of reference material centered on a group of 100 aircraft which were part of an RAF order, paid for by a certain country , crewed by volunteer pilots from a certain country (hint, hint) which you could use for painting yours. One I would not use as a reference is the USN’s museum’s example as it is fully restored meaning it is the museum’s interpretation of how it should be painted.

I will be doing a 5 or 2 sqn SAAF in the northern Desert.
They were mostly Dark earth, mid stone with either azure. (some even had Sky underside)
The marking positions and sizes were like RAF, but with orange inplace of the brick red.
