Does anyone here know anything about the history of the 18th Fighter Squadron (343 FG, 11th Air Force) in the Aleutians in WW2? And my apologies if I listed that in the wrong order, Im from Canada 
Were they involved in combat? How active were the P-39s? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks
The 18th FS along with the 11th FS of the 28th Composite Group, then became the 343rd FG of the 11th AF. They were a P-40 group. The 11th was the Aleutian Tigers. The 54th FG sent a detachment to the Aleutians consisting of the 57th FS. Check my earlier post. Check the USAF Museum website as they have a Q model done up as the D model of Lt. Spoonts. You can use wikipedia for any of these squadrons and groups. Ladd Field (now Fort Wainwright) here in Fairbanks was the main Russian Lend Lease base where P-39âs and B-25âs were transferred. The local Pioneer Air Museum has several parts and pieces of P-39âs on display. Two good books to have is Brian Garfieldâs âThousand Mile Warâ and the one done by John Haile Cloe. If you can find it on Amazon is âFoul Weather Frontâ by Rhodes Arnold which is another good one. Also try âThe Forgotten Warâ, vol. 1-4 by Stan Cohen which is full of photographs, including the RCAF P-40 squadrons.
