P-39A Airacobra

A few pics of my latest build - Monogram 1:48 P-39A, an oldie but a goodie. I used some p.e. here and there, but the build is mostly OOB. I tried to “dirty” this one up and tried freehanding the camo pattern, which didn’t come out too badly. Does the desert tan look too light to you, or is it just me? Overall, I am mostly pleased with the rresults, but I can see a lot of mistakes that I will eliminate in my next project (either a 1:48 T-birds F-100D or 1:72 B-47 Stratojet). Comments and constructive criticism are, as always, welcomed.

Very nice! I really like the Airacobra, and this one’s a colorful version. I have a 1/72 kit I need to start some time soon, but I think it lacks the detail of this one. But you’ve motivated me to get it going!

Great work Brian! She turned out well in all aspects. Camo and weathering look well done.Good pics too…

Whether the colors are spot on or not is irrelevant. The colors contrast nicely and she looks good on your shelf! I’ve got an Eduard version of the P-39 enroute, and your photos have upped my anticipation! Great pics.

Looks like a plane that rolled out of the door, flew a few times, but hasn’t had a chance to fade yet…I think it is perfect ! Very, very well done.

Not too bad, Brian. The Desert Tan might be a little light, but it looks okay to me and, as Mucker said, don’t get too caught up in whether or not the color is exactly right. I find myself doing that too often and end up with a headache!

Looking forward to seeing your next builds; you certainly didn’t pick two easy ones in the F-100 and B-47!

Mark

Very nice build of the old kit. I think your camo colors are about right. Here’s a pic of a restored AC at the Airzoo Museum in Kalamazoo Mich.

Hogan, Wulf, Mucker, cthulhu, Mark and Rick,

Thank you all for the kind comments, and special thanks, Rick, for the pic of the restoration! The P-39 has always been a favorite a/c for me. One of these days, Iwant to get the Eduard kit and go for max detailing.

I have been researching the cockpit of the B-47E for the next build, but references are kinda scarce. Given that most of the interior detail is obscured once the fuselage is joined and the canopy in place, I probably will just add enough detail to give an impression of the cockpit. I’ll post progress pics as I go with the 47, thanks again to all of you!

That looks great! Free-handing camo ain’t easy- you did a good job on that.

That’s neat to see that kit- I built that P-39 years ago. You did an excellent job on a classic kit.

Nice job on the free-hand camo. It looks juist like it was originally sprayed. It is a very well-done job. As an aside, the serial number and markings denote it as a P-39F-1 used as a trainer in Florida, where it was written off in August 1943. An interesting website to go to for historical info on almost every US military airplane is: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/usafserials.html

jwb and richs26,

Thanks for the good words, fellas, I really appreciate it! This was a fun build with several “experiments” on my part, and all in all, it came out fairly well; I learned a lot, too!

richs26, thanks for the link, that site has some excellent info, I have already added it to my refernce file!

You did a great job on a horrible old kit. I can say that truthfully, because I built one of these last year.
