P-38J tire question

Which AM wheels would be appropriate for Hasegawa’s 1/48 ha09582 P-38J Lightning ‘459th Fighter Squadron’- the one with the green dragons on the engine nacelles? I see “diamond” and “checkerboard”. Is there a definitive answer to that?

what year is that bird?

I’m wondering if it makes that much of a difference. The reason I say that is because I have a book about the P-38 and in one of the pictures it says something to the effect of “Note the oval tread pattern on the landing gear.” First off, the B&W picture was really impossible to see any tread pattern whatsoever. Secondly, I would imagine that they used whatever was available when it was available. I can’t imagine the crew cheif changing out the tires and going “Hey wait a minute! This is a P-38J! I can’t use the checkerboard pattern on this!” I’m guessing that the odds are at one point in its life it wore one style of tread pattern and at another point it wore a different pattern.

Just a thought…

Thanks guys…Woodbeck- not sure of the year…guess I might have to wait until I get the kit. june 19th. All I know is the above and it is an OD bird
Eric- I am guessing that both were used on the J, based on the info at GM. I figure since this is a well known bird, I want to get it right.

Oh, and the planes name is “Miss V”
