Got back from a visit to TAFB. As I was leaving, crossing the bridge, a P-38 departed the runway and flew right over my car. I only got a quick look at it, but it was definately a P-38. Why didn’t I have my camera with me? Those Allison engines sure make a lot of noise.[wow]
Berny i was floored when i saw it was P-38 as well i saw the morning after it arrived here at Tyndall it was parked in our hanger, it came into town to do a heritage flight our F-4’s were involved in that, there was also two P-51’s and a F-86 here.
As far as the P-38 is concerned it was Glacier Girl, for those who don’t it was the P-38 they found in a glacier i’m not sure as where it was found at but they dug it up and rebuilt it and they did fine job with it as well it’s truly a beautiful aircraft.
The P-38s I think there were 5 of them and a B-17 brand spanking new were on a ferry flight to Europe during WW11, ran low on fuel and all bellyed in on a glacier on Greenland, and were mostly forgotten till a few years back when someone went in and recovered some of them. I think there was an article in National Geographic a year or two ago.
I think there was a an article about them as well and i didn’t put that in my post because i wasn’t to sure of where i saw and when and i didn’t want to give any false information.
Glacier Girl recovery and restoration can be seen in an excellent documentary video that was shown and can be purchased from the History Channel on DVD
