P-38 Suggestions

Going to start working on a P-38 I started about 10 years ago, lost the nose piece and put it back in the box. Time to remedy the mistake. Working on getting a new nose cone and starting to plan out which P-38 I want to model. I want to stay away from camo green, thinking of going natural metal finish, I’ve done some research and found a couple but was wondering if anyone on here had some awesome P-38 paint schemes I may be missing.

Model well!

Well Squatch,

I don’t believe that the P-38 ever had any real interesting paint schemes during the course of the war. The British had their camo schemes which always look nice, but early on in the war there was some sort of ban on supercharger technology trading hands. So the first P-38s that the British got were not well received as they performed under expectations without them. There was a “Haze” color that Lockheed experimented with, but it was discontinued as this blueish color became more recognizable at higher altitudes. So other than the OD/Neutral Gray, you had the NMF P-38s in the J and L variants. There’s a good bit of nose art on many of these NMF P-38’s that might interest you. I might suggest you peak at some of those.

Hey Squatch. Good luck on a challenging but rather nice kit. Its one of the first kits I built when I returned to the hobby . For decals, check out Ebay and type in “48 P-38” and sort it to “lowest price first” setting (to get to them quicker…your choice). There’s a ton of decals on there with some being rare and out of production. You should be able to find some interesting schemes on there. I hope you post in progress pictures.
