For Christmas, I received the Trumpeter 1/32 P-38L kit, which I am about 1/10th into. I received it from my Dad, who has always held the P-38 as his favorite plane since childhood. INt he late 80’s/early 90’s (can’t quite remember), he went to Osh Kosh for part of the renovation of Glacier Girl. He brought back a piece of the original plane, a short cut of cord from somewhere in he cabin, and thought it would be a neat idea if I would build this piece somewhere inside the model.
What I want to do is convernt this kit from the L version all the way back to the F of the original Glacier Girl, if it’s something my skill set can handle. From what I’ve read, the only visual difference seems to be the engines. Is this correct? Or am I missing something?
Converting an L back to an F would be a major undertaking. The most significant visual external difference would be the chin scoops on the L which didn’t exist on the F. There are a lot of other differences as well. If you want to tackle the project, I’d suggest buying the Detail & Scale vol. 57 & 58 books, which will provide detail drawings & all the info needed to make the conversion. Good Luck.
Mark, is that set actually available or only planned ? I didn’t see any way to get a pic of what’s included in the conversion. In any case, The $47.00 for the set might be worth it if you really want a 1/32 F.
I’ve just sent an inquiry to Rutman. If it looks doable, I may just give it a shot. In trying to get my 59 year old father back into modelling again, this just may be a good chance to ask for his “help” in the modification of his favorite warplane!
