Does anybody know where I can get decals with the 27th? squadron emblem on them. I want to build a P-36 in either 1/72 or 1/48th scale. I just love the look of those P-36 painted in the war game colors.

Try Starfighter Decals (www.starfighter-decals.com) or Yellow Wings (www.yellow-wingsdecals.com).
Startfighter has at least 2 sheets for the P-36, and in both scales, if I’m not mistaken. I have the 1/72 scale set, but I don’t recall which squadrons are depicted on it.
Yellow Wings may not have the P-36 in their catalog, but they have the P-26, either currently, or about to be released. If they don’t currently show the P-36, it would be worth contacting them to ask. I spoke with the owner at MosquitoCon, and they have a series of new aircraft subjects in the pipeline.
I’m trying to remember which squadrons are depicted on the sheet from Monogram’s 1/72 P-36, but I don’t think it’s the 27th Pursuit Sqn.

Thanks, I checked them out, I did not see anything with the 27th. I have e-mailed both of them, hopefully they will come up with something.
Look at Dana Bell’s “Air Force Colors”, volume 1, as it has pictures of the squadron and group emblems of the early years to 1942. Also look at the Google Life Magazine Images and the Google Images for this.
D’OH! I Should have known that if anyone had a color photo of that scheme, Jeff Ethell would have… He had one of, if not THE largest collection of WW2 color photos of anyone I ever knew or heard of… I miss that guy… We’d struck up an “airshow friendship” and crossed paths many times at them before he crashed…
Thanks for that link… What would you guess as to the colors? The white and tan I can do, but I can’t tell if it’s black or a really dark OD…
Hi, Hammer, I think it’s actually brown or dark OD, white, and the tannish color was noted as “mustard”.
That pic is in the first volume of Detail & Scale’s P-40 books, if I’m not mistaken, and I think that was the text description that was included. I’ll look it up tonight and post back with any info.
Note, too, how the rank or position stripes are carried forward from the NMF livery to the camouflage scheme, but instead of the gold/red/blue or whatever they were, they’re represented by contrasting camo colors.
I have an old Aoshima P-36 in 1/72 that I’m saving just for this subject, to paint this scheme. I have the Buffalo from the same series, that I’m going to paint in the Navy’s McClelland Barclay scheme. Projects for the future…

It’s going to be fall before the 1/72 P-12 sheet comes out with them on it. Be aware, those aircraft were not painted for “war games” but for the 1939 Cleveland Air Races. The book by Robert Archer, The Official Monogram US Army Air Service and US Air Corps Color Guide Vol 1 1908-1941 has painting diagrams for each one.
