Over coating metallic paints

I’m painting a 1/48 scale Japanese “Tony”. I air brushed Model Master Chrome Silver FS17178 using Model Master 1799 air brush thinner. The problem I’m having is applying flat colors over the chrome silver. The chrome silver has set more than 24 hours, however if I apply a flat color by brush the chrome silver comes off and mixes with the color being applied.

Do I need to apply a clear coat over the chrome silver? Any cautions or concerns when applying the clear coat?

Any other suggestions?

Thank you

Sounds like you’re using enamels on top of the silver as well. It would be best to spray the second color coat on with an airbrush if you can. When you brush the paint on, it’s usually much thicker than airbrushed. So, the solvents in the enamel paint being brushed on “eats” into the exsisting silver and smudges with the brush strokes. I doubt a clear coat would help either. If you have to hand brush on the second color, I would recommend using acrylic paint. Acrylics wont “eat” into the base coat. Hope this helps…

Thanks Andy. I’ll go the airbrushed route.
