I received word today on the cost of repairing my camera. The connector for that cable that uploads pics to my computer became detached from the PC board inside the camera. I figured that it has to be a simple soldering job. Power must run through the connector, as my camera was dead when it became loose. Boy, was I wrong ! $288 plus shipping to have it repaired ! It is a Canon Power Shot G2 (4 megapixel), a $900 camera that I got for $400. The repair would cost almost as much as the camera !
Canon gave me another alternative, though. They will sell me a Power Shot G5 (5 megapixels) for $325. I’ve decided to get the better camera. I’ll have it by the weekend, so there will be pics once again from Pix !
This is the one I’m getting: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong5/
I’m happy to have a new, better camera, but that’s a sneaky way to do it. They really have you by the short ones when it comes to digital camera repair ! [V]
Normally they don’t fix the thing, but simply replace the affected part with a new one and the major portion of the cost is you purchasing the new parts from them.
Now the cram more and more onto a board and thus it IS cheaper to rather buy new than try to get anything fixed.
Hey pix glad you are finding a way. I know what its like to have some serious cash flow problems and to want to do something thats almost but not quite out of reach. Hang in there and know that you did the right thing. Look forward to seeing you in action again.
I had a simalar thing happen to me with a pair of sunglasses from oakley . The mirror covering on the lenses started to chip away . They wouldn’t replace the lenses but offered to repace the sunglasses for 100 dollars. At the least i hope you enjoy your new cam. I have a question for you Pix. Do you have any colour profiles for a heinkel he 111 with winter motteled camouflage on the top surface. the aircraft i’m looking for is no s7 fa out of finland. I can only find one side profile. regards Peter.

I’m happy to know that we’ll be getting to get more great pics from you again. Thanks for the update on your camera. I’m back to using 35mm (Must use snail mail to process) since my digital took a dive in an ice chest this summer. It still works, but it won’t compensate for shutter speed worth a darn. And being in a cash jam, its hard to come up with another $400 for a new camera.
