OrangeCon My First IPMS Contest Results are In, NOTHING for Citadelgrad PICTURE HEAVY!!!!!!

I decided to enter a local contest, and decided to blog my exerience. Since it’s a couple miles from my house, I came home while the judges are locked in the room to post my experience so far.

Registration was pretty straightforward, I went online this week and filled out the forms, printed them, went to the first station and paid $10.00, which covered the first 3 models, although I only brought 2.

They checked my paperwork, and sent me into the nearly empty room to put my stuff anywhere within the tape boundaries of each appropriate category.

I did this, gave the Sherman a final dusting with a soft brush, and walked away.

THen I snapped a bunch of photos

Here’s the Shermie

A cool Churchill next door

Beautiful Char

Stewart

My direct competition, a nice Tamiya Sherman, the guy who put it there was realy nice and helpful

THis guy put some NICE stuff down, this is right next to my entry

Here’s the table, looks like 21 entries in my class

I understand this river boat was his, too

Same guy here

Ed wanted some pics of this cool dio

This is for Ed, too, LWS

For Redleg, a nice 105

This figure is incredible, 1/35 and smoke wisping up from the cig

Here are all the figs entered

Thanks for looking, I will post whatever happens,

Bill

Love your Sherman. Good luck and have a lot of fun.

YOur Sherman’s base kicks that other one’s base all over the map! [swg]

Good luck Bill!

I know that Chruchill and Cromwell. You have some good builders there alongside you! I wish I was not workng to day and able to attend… Keep the pics and posts coming.[tup]

Hey Citadel and Stickpusher

Remind me ahead of time next year and I’ll travel on over to attend.

Thanks Karl and Stikpusher! I needed that encouragement, the results are in, that Cromwell won the category and best armor, here’s a shot of it with the heavy metal

Second was the Char I puicked out as a favorite, too

Third, a nice T34

In figures, here are some winners, the grand prize guy with a nice French Revolutionary won the category and best overall figure, but he packed up right away, I thought I had snapped a picture

Well, my first contest under my belt, a TON of support here from everyone, especially Edmund, this one is in the books!

Bill

G man, mark your calender now. Our chapter holds this contest every October. I sure want to go next year.

Citadel, thanks for posting all the pics! Are you going to or have you already joined IPMS OC? I know that it is a very positive modeling group to be part of.

http://www.ipmsoc.org/ipmsoc.htm

Aww, that’s too bad, Bill. [sigh] Well, at least you tried–more than some guys are willing to do. [;)] You’lll get 'em next year! [8D][tup]

Funny how the colonial-figures guys always clean up in the Figures category? They do that in every contest I’ve ever been in.

Stickpusher Maybe, I don’t want to over commit, I have to steal build time as it is. I will probably go to a meeting to see what is what.

Doog, thanks, at least I can say I think the best stuff won!

I forgot to add, I did win something, a 1/700 scale ship(?) and a 1/32 thing with a propeller on it!

So all was not a loss.

THanks, guys. Agentg, I’ll see you next year, huh?

Bill

All the best to you Bill you did your best and that’s all is expected!

Your Shermie is the Cat’s Pajama’s!

That Sherman’s a winner in my book.

Hey ya went and put your work out there for all to see. That’s a winner no matter what.

Stick, the sites book marked, see ya next year.

Bill - First I hope you enjoyed the experience…that is what is most important. Next you see in person what others do…a learning experience.

Shows are not all about winning awards. Yep, we all post pictures when we win something but just going and displaying your models make you a winner. This hobby is for a large part art and the shows are just an art exhibition.

Congrats on you first show…may you have many more.

PS…thanks for the peek at the 105 [;)]

Rounds Complete!!

[#ditto] what Redleg said, I mainly go to meet and talk to fellow modelers, and of course hit the vendor tables. Good luck on the next show.

Rob

Redleg and Scratchmod (Rob), I could not agree more. It was an amazing experience. I met some cool people, although the vendor area was a bit light in areas where I have interest.

Honestly, I have just started back into the hobby almost exactly a year ago. The Sherman was only my 3d model, the figure was also my 3d attempt at a fig. Based on what I could see of the other entries, I liked the ones that won to actually win, see my first photo post.

My Sherman was built to display in my home, not for a show. I got the urge to enter something, and I felt it was my best, so I polished it up. I’m a better builder now (although there are some local guys that ROCK).

It would not have been right for me to place instead of those other builds, and it certainly gives me something to strive for. I certainly felt my Sherman had a place on the table (which was a concern I had ), and I got some nice compliments, but I can and will do even better. And the figure competition but has bitten me, too.

Thanks for looking in, guys

Bill

~ You seem to have had a pretty good time at the show. You really gave it the 'ole college try Bill. Congrads just for getting ALL THOSE last minute improvements done and getting there with your sanity ! Some of those models where pretty good, but nothing you couldn’t compete against next time(Interesting 2/3 Armor winners we’re sitting on R.R. tracks?) ~~Did’nt they have any Dioramas there? Didn’t see any pix of ‘em? I supose I should have gone, it’s only like 2 hours, but I’m not currently doing shows. O’ course, someone’s gotta hold up the Dio end! OK OK, it’s Sunday, get out of bed and tell us more. I also want to hear in detail about your conversation with J. Mitchie from Tankrats. let’s go, spill it ! Indy

Bill, these things happen but, the next show that you take them to may turn out with completly different results. Love your Sherman.[tup]

Bill, I cant emphasize enough about going to a few meetings of both IPMS and AMPS, since you are local to both. Like you saw, there are some top notch model builders locally here and you will learn all sorts of good ideas by talking with them. AMPS is strictly a show and tell basis of display during the monthly meetings, while IPMS has a monthly contest for chapter members. And talking with those other builders will give you plenty of ideas to try out and see if they work for you. Overall it soulds like you had a pretty positive experience there!

Bill,

I was pulling for you. At least you know where you stand and next time will be better. Those pics are great and thanks for taking the time to take them and post on the forum.

Good attitude about your first event. From what you’ve shown of the armor category, it looks to me like the judges did a good job. Since you can never tell who and what can show up and you’re dealing with a 1-2-3 system, I won’t blow smoke and say you’re going to beat the pants off people next year, but you do have very good skills and are willing to take advice, and that will go a long way in your growth.

One suggestion…next time, instead of going home while the judges are working, join them. You can work in related classes where you don’t have anything entered. Since the first criteria are always the basics, you don’t need to be an expert on anything, just havea good, impartial and fair eye. Frankly, “experts” on a given subject can be deterimental in that they may expect accurization to correct items in the original kit and that 's not part of he judging until you get to tie breaking. Much as our advice here is good to help you improve your skills, doing a close examination of a class will really help you hone your skills.

On the question of the two tanks on the railroad tracks, neither of them would have qualified or should have been entered as dioramas as neither tells a story. The first place winner, I’m sure was helped by the loaded suspension work he did, snce all three places look to be very close is execution.

I’m curious if the 1st and 3rd were by the same guy. The groundwork looks very similar.

I am with Al. 1st, that IS the attitude to have. And if you want to see a notable improvment in your modeling? Start judging. Changes how you look at every single part in the box.
