Did anyone watch the Genesys 300 Indycar race last night? It was the first race with the new Aeroscreen design. The Aeroscreen encapsulates the driver, thus keeping the driver safer.
Any thoughts on the new look? I would find the windscreen’s center support to be distracting for the driver.
Watched the race-I like the appearance of the windscreen better than the F1 ‘halo’ although both are a change and will take time to adjust to/accept.
I’m in the middle of Winning is Not Enough by Sir Jackie Stewart-a harsh reminder of how dangerous the sport was (and still is ) and the advancements made-I have to think the drivers will adapt to the middle bar as the F1 drivers have
I’ve already commented on this subject elsewhere and having been a race marshall for some 25 years and now retired these ‘extras’ on open wheel race cars are very necessary whether we like the look of them or not. Flying wheels, brake discs, wings, fire extinguishers and animals all cause great damage and even death to the drivers, these will hopefully stop my fellow marshals having to experience that carnage again.
I watched the race, I really do not know enough to form an honest opinion on the new design however open wheels are fun to watch. The 6sec pit stops makes NASCAR stops look like a slow walk in the park.
Very impressive. The cars are uber cool, and anything to promote safety is a plus. 223mph WOW!
It’s ugly. These cars along with F1 used to be beautiful machines. However the halo in F1 and the windscreen in Indycar is necessary. Justin Wilson who was killed a few years ago in Indycar would have been saved by this safety device. Many racers over the years have led the way for safety innovations. Jackie Stewart comes to mind. Without these pioneers open wheel racing would still lose dozens of drivers every year.
Ive been all over the world watching F1. I’ve been to most Indycar events right here in the US. As long as the racing is good the cars don’t need to win a beauty contest.

This is the Indycar Aeroscreen, I think that it is ugly and it completely hides the driver. It must be really hot in that cockpit.

I sort of like it. I like it better than the F1 cars. Those look like safety cages from some supermodified. While in my mind nothing is prettier than champ cars of the early fifties, and the Watsons, these aren’t bad. Lots of curves and streamlining.
I have a kit of last years 500 winner I am about to start.
Not a fan, but if it will keep a driver’s head from getting smashed by flying car debris, it’s OK by me. Don’t like the “multi blade razor head” spoilers on F-1 cars either. My favorite era was the mid 1970s. All analog, no razors, But lots of flying car debris unfortunately.
The F1 looks like it has a proboscus of sorts.
Or a sandal thong…
I watched the race and like the aero screen. I like the cars better without them, but they seem to be needed. The aero screen looks MUCH better than the HALO in my mind.
My only concern is that it seems hard for the drivers to get out fast.

While a great idea, would be better if molded in one piece of lexan.
I like the Indy model better. If it keeps drivers safe, I’m all for it.
