I saw a post on here that asked for your favorite kit of all time. What about that one kit you’ve built more than once but just can’t get it right.
Mine is the Monogram P-51D. I have built this get no less than five times and never can get it. The last time I had it right just to have the decals for Detroit Miss go to crap. That one met with an untimely death against a wall. Swore I would never try the kit again. Bought one two days later.
mine would be the Revellogram P-61. i could never get it right no matter how much i tried. i pretty much messed it up from the beginning with tube glue… and yes it was one of my first models. I have bad memories with RM kits. I vow to never buy any of their old kits again, but that vow is not very strong.
maybe I’ll live up to it after I buy another P-61, the flying fortress, super fortress, F-18E, Stuka…
As aircraft go, I cannot for the life of me make Hasegawa’s 1/72 S-2F Tracker work.
I’ve seen it built up beautifully at shows, taken hints from those who have made it work and yet the three times I’ve tried to build it, it comes to nothing.[sigh]
Mine is the Trimaster/Dragon/Revell et all Me 262 In all its guises.
So far Ive built the Mistel and had problems with the undercart doors, totally unable to detail the gunbay and get the covers to fit even the fuselage wing fit was lousy. But when I joined the "bomb" fuse halves to wing-no trouble, I think its because the bomb fuselage has internal stiffening pre moulded and is in thicker plastic.
The nightfighter (actually the V056) and same again fuselage to wing, gunbay etc. Back into the box and pending/spares stack.
The 3rd kit is the Jabo or Me262A2a Ithink. This had all the above plus a twist in the fuselage just in front of the tail that I only noticed after fighting for four weeks on and of with the other problems. This went back into the pending stack until I thought “why not cut off the tail and refix in an upright position”. Cut off and no joy, back in the box. Now I`ve resurrected it back onto the work bench and am building it as the Me262C1-a which had a rocket engine in the back like the Komet. So one scratch built engine, a ficticious tail trolley, a shark mouth and tiger stripe scheme in RLM colours later (hey it works for me) and its finally going the way I want it.
Now I`ve got another 6 variants of these kits and a couple of Tamiya ones so I think the next time I build one I shall try bashing two into one and see how it goes.
Mine would have to be the Revell Monogram P-38J/L (why would they market it as an J when its an L?) I can never seem to get the wing/booms to look right.
I can’t ever get anything from Revell together well. Especially their B-26 Marauder. This kit was so bad, I won’t attempt it again! Some people do great work with these kits. Not me…
I had the worst time trying to put together my Academy Hornet. I even ordered replacement parts and had a harder time the second time around. I am not very happy. I am going to see if they will let me buy the parts again.
My worst was the Academy 1/72 B-29 Enola Gay. Stupid wings wouldn’t go together right, then my efforts at fixing them worsened the appearance, and on and on. Finally slapped it together in a hurry, painted it haphazardly, put the decals on it an hung it largely out of site from the ceiling of my walk-in attic. Right next to the Revell (Germany) 1/72 Fw200 Condor that was also a pathetic build.
I’ll second the 1/48 Revell B-26. Andy hit the nail on the head. I’ve never been so tortured and abused by a single kit it all of my modelling days. It should come with a surgeon general warning, 5 gallon bucket of putty and a heavy bag to take your frustrtation out on.
That would be the one I am currentl building - The Fonderie Miniature PV-1 in 1:48 scale. I have been a week on the cockpit alone, trying to get a resemblance of a decent fit. The combo of hard resin and SOFT plastic is, to be charitable, a nightmare, then throw in white metail details! I am just venting a bit, I knew that this was going to be anything but a “shake and bake” build, but even the directions are atrocious! I don’t mind the lack of verbiage, however, the illustrations reek as well! If this one even resembles the real thing when completed it will be a miracle; prog pics will post shortly, so everyone can have a good laugh!
Ok, off the [soapbox], thanks for letting me vent!!!
