I just traded on of my models for this kit. The kit has been well kept accept for Water Damage to the box instructions and Decals. Now what aftermarket kits will work with this kit? Also what time frame does that early chin pod work up until. As this one has the old one built in. Can any of the current cockpit update’s work or not? How about B or D upgrades?
If its the chin pod with ALQ-100 ECM antenna and position light and nothing else. Then its only the F-14A ( early ) that had it. Sorry I don’ t know anything about cockpit config.
Yeah it just has the small one. The original pod. When did they update to the others. i know there are several so. I am trying to determine what markings I can use to make it look authentic. I wish it came with the newer ones so I could use a later and nicer paint scheme. But I have no scratchbuilding experience and like I said in another post it scares me right now. If I could only find someone who had a spare I could cut this one off and not be so worried about it. Thanks
Its hard to place it in time. The “small” pod was used all the way up to block 95, but even before block 95 they used 5 different pods. You need some pics to see wether the one you like to model have the small pod or not. I can’ t give you a time frame ( years this to year that ) only that it wasn’t used after the block 95 model.
This is what I come up with so far.
VF-2 Bounty Hunters aboard the USS Kitty Hawk
VF-111 Sundowners also USS Kitty HAwk
VF-31 Felix the Cat squadron USS Forrestal
VF-211 Fighting Checkmates USS Constellation
All used the F-14 early with the small chin pod at a point in time.
Im sure there are more, but these are the only ones I found in my books.
There were only 90 production blocks, you said anything up to Block 95 used that original chin pod. But there is nothing about Block 90, did you mean 75 or maybe even 85
?
Nope my book says block 95 and later did not have the “small” pod. So unless its a printing error, its block 95.
The latest pic I’ve seen of a “small” pod is 1986, Idon’ t know if they were mounted any latter than this.
My book indicates that the block numbers ran as high as 155. And then they changed it to F-14 C and D. Its a book from Squadron/signal and they tend not to make mistakes about this. But its the only source I have so I can’ t confirm it.
Oh and the Jolly Rogers also used them, that would be a nice one, Im sure there is aftermarket decals for the Jolly Rogers in 1/32nd scale.
That would be cool with TARPS ppods and everything.
Archer only one problem with the decals I have the OLD chin pod the very first one. So that sort of limits my choices for markings. I only wish I could get a hold of the more popular one. But such is life.
here’s a shot of the tomcat, did this one a while ago, and really liked the weathering, so kept the decaling all almost none. I think she came out ok …
See you have the newer chin pod, if I could only get one of those then I would have more options for the markings I could look into. Nice looking Tom Archer. Way to go. Looks interesting without unit markings that is for sure.
Thanks, that was my first 1/32 jet. and 15 - 20 years ago, really like the way the paint came out. Only problem with the kit was matching the fore fusologe (cabin) with the body. Used large C clamps to get the parts to line-up, before I could start filling. Must have worked, she hasn’t come apart yet.
If we’re talking about the same thing, the kit came with both pods!!! The smaller one was molded into the fore fusaloge halves and the newer one was a two piece deal + the clear lens. The fit was fight enough, that I just pressed it in place. Not sure which version of the kit you have, but if you give me a few days I can dig up the box, and probably still have the instruction sheet, for the part numbers. Revell/Monogram might still have spares around. Also, shouldn’t be too difficult to scratch built one, really isn’t much too it.
BTW - when I first built it, I didn’t like the looks of the larger pod, so I left it off. A few years later, I was looking at it, and though it needed something more interesting in that area, so I threw it together and pressed it on.
