old rare kits

been seeing a lot of old and rare kits on ebay. just was wondering if you buy them do you leave them in the box as is or do you put them together and display them.

I’d buy 'em to build 'em, usually OOB.

I have an ancient Renwal M-47 that I’m doing just that with. There’s really no point in trying to “accurize” it (geez, it’d be impossible!), so I’m just building it straight OOB.

Along those lines, I suppose there are plenty of old kits that can feasibly be accurized, so some folks probably do that.

What’s the point of having an old but unbuilt model on a shelf?
NO POINT WHATSOEVER!
so, if you can deal with the innaccuracies, and the quality, then build away!

I got a 20+ year old Tamyia Panther. I will be adding a bunch of after market parts to enhance the model.

I’m a builder, the joys in creating, not owning for me.

I Find it hard to break into any kit new or old, I like the way they look in the box.
most of my kits stay on the shelf for at least a year while I research the subject (excuses excuses).
I,m a bit of a sad “Anorak wearer” though so build away & have fun!
Happy modeling, Gotter.[:)]

I have plenty of old, rare kits, but I buy them with every intention of building them. The only exception is an old Aurora Skipjack nuclear. Right after I bought the kit I had as a kid, Revell reissued the exact same kit for $6. The art work on the box is real vintage and nice. I figured I’d build the $6 kit and display it with the old kit box as a backdrop.

I have quite a few older kits from my childhood like the old Aurora 1/48 scale armor, ITC T-92 Airborne Drop Tank (only two of the actual tanks were made), most of the Renwal armor kits, and some of the old Monogram and Airfix 1/32-1/35 scale armor.

Probably the “rarest” kit I have is the DML M4A1 75mm early Sherman. For some reason this kit wasn’t a big seller when it first came out and has not been reissued. I’ve seen these kits go for $50-70 on eBay. I picked mine up for around $15 in 1997 at a Ben Franklin craft store going out of business. It was 50% off.

For me, the old kits are the ones I made as a kid and I enjoy them for that reason. I will usually make the kit OOB, then save the box… Some of the old kits are a lot of fun to make in spite of their inaccuracies.
I like the old Renwal kits, Aurora kits, Pyro 1/48 ‘flying machines’, etc. Some of them can be made into very nice display pieces.

I buy to build!!! I bought a matchbox LRDG jeep and chevy 30 c.w.t. off of Evilbay, its almost 25 years old and it was a nice kit to build (not that highly detailed though)

It depends on if you want the kit to have the fun of building it, or you want it as a potential investment. I’m with the rest of the members. Unless you really think it’s worth keeping as an investment, build it and have a ball! (It will also serve to remind you of how easy we often have it these days!!) lol
