I recieved an old monogram Mig-29 in 1/48 scale as a gift from a local antique store. anybody out there know of any tips, tricks, or any general info an how to improve this kit? The decals were also missing, and I am on a budget as well. If anyone could help me out, that would be great. Thank you!
I just pick up one of these the other day. I built one a long time ago. Can’t recall any issues with it. As far as improvements go, I haven’t reseached the 29 at all. Kit is pretty simple, straight forward and it looks like a Mig-29. Great for a nice simple"decompression" build!!!
Be careful on the forward fuselage seams, you can lose detail there unless you fill and sand carefully. The fin strakes are too narrow, they should be thicker to hold chaff dispensers, or some such thing on the MiG-29A. Fix that if you care too. Have fun.
The Monogram MiG-29 is really way off dimensionally in almost every respect. Verlindin did a correction set for it a long time ago and it was quite extensive and probably now OOP. As far as I know the best current 1/48 MiG-29 kit is the Academy kit. While it has some issues it is way more accurate than the Monogram kit. If you just want a simple build go with the Monogram kit but if you’re looking for an accurate MiG get the Academy kit.
I got this kit as a gift, But I am really out to just practice alot of new techniques on this kit ( many i heard of from Fine Scale!) and am not really looking for accuracy in dimensions. If it looks like a Fulcrum, thats good enough for me. =) I was ust wonderign if there was going to be any difficulties with building the kit, and seeing as the decals were missing, I’ll just make some up myself…so it would’nt really represent any AirForce’s MiG anyway. There is a slight warping of the fuselage peices in my kit, probably from just being mishandled back in the day, but it does look like it will go together nicely. Thank you to all who responded!
Owl, I can’t help ya with the build since I ain’t a Jet Guy (even less of Soviet military guy), but I have some Soviet stars from other kits. Just PM me with yer particulars if you want them, no strings attached…
I won’t sharp-shoot ya about dimensions, tell you about after-market parts that are out of production, or even tell you which kit you should buy instead of the one you want to build…
Thanks for your generous offer, Hans, but i think i have an idea of what i want to do with the markings for this kit. I was mostly worried about if this kit had some construction issues, but it seems like a simple build. I am looking foward to getting this one built!
