"Old Crow" Mustang - UPDATE

This is my first post in the aircraft section.

Last WE I got myself Tamiya’s 1/72 P-51D Mustang and Eduard’s PE kit to go with it. Looks like a good kit.

The model comes with tree different decal sets one for the “Big Beautiful Doll”, one I don’t remember and one for the “Old Crow”. Since the “BBD” is so with spread I decided to go with the “Old Crow”.
From what I saw on the internet the “Old Crow” can be done in bare metal and in OliveDrab. I’m thinking to do the bare metal version.

My question is, when did the color scheme change from OD to bare metal (I suppose)?
Can I use then decals from the OD version on the bare metal one?
And what is the serial number? It should be 414450 but I’ve seen 414877, too.

Any other suggestion is welcome. Thanks!

There was more than one “Old Crow”. Check your references for the one you wish to model.

Regards, Rick

Thanks guys! [tup]

rjkplasticmod the serial of “my model” is 414450 and it is a D model.

mkhoot that reference site is great! Thanks a lot!

I met Bud Anderson at the Nationals in 2004.
He’s a real nice guy. [;)]
He lives about 2 hours drive from me.

It’s more than a year but the bird is almost done, so I thought I’d share some pics:

Looks really nice, Avus. the NMF came out really good.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but your landing gear is installed wrong. I think you have the struts backward. Oleo scissors to the rear…

should look like this:

Back to the drawing board[:-^]

Thanks, mucker! NMF was the toughest part on this model.

[banghead] Damn! Now everyone will know I’m not an aircraft guy!
Thanks for noticing that mistake. Will try to correct it, crockett.

Yiup have to agree… looks real good. If you can’t fix the gear… just say it was an experimental pusher version.[;)]

Thanks Marc, but it won’t be necessary: fixed the problem!
Will post pics tomorrow.

Avus - in spite of the “experimental” landing gear, it looks great! BTW - what paint did you use for the NMF?

Good build and paintjob.[tup] Definately a looker.[;)]

Thanks jschlechty and TANGO 1!

To paint my aircraft I used kitchen foil [;)] and Game Workshop steel.
It took me several attempts before finding the best combination of adhesive and foil.

I felt such a suker reading I made such a stupid mistake … guess I’m really a rookie in planes!

Avus, that is no worse than the time when I installed the Feifel air cleaners upside down on my first Tiger I. [;)]
