The thread about multiple kits of various types and subtypes got me thinking about the variety of scales… Some folks model in one or two, some will model only one, and some don’t care WHAT scale a kit is, they gotta have that kit!
So I’s wonderin’… Whattya model in the most, and why? M’self, it’s 98% 1/48th aircraft, 100% 1/35th Armor, 99.9% 1/25th cars (there’s a couple 1/24th-ers in there), and 100% 1/35th boats (I only got one of those though, an LCM-3 from Trumpeter for a D-Day diorama)…
The 2% on aircraft are a mix of 1/35th Helicopters and 1/32nd airplanes, all for dioramas that are featuring 1/35th scale armor and vehicles, and I’m thinking about getting some 1/48th vehicles for the 1/48th dioramas… I only make dioramas, never displays, and I HAVE gotten some kits to do “Forced Perspective” shadow boxes, using say, a 1/35th scale Sherman frng on a 1/72nd Tiger, and a couple of dogfights where the a 1/48th B-25 is getting fired on by a 1/72nd Messerschmitt… I also have a couple bombing shadow boxes in mind, and SBD attacking Soryu and George Gay’s TBF attacking Kaga during the Battle of Midway…
Anyway, my two main scales are 1/48th and 1/35th… I see kits of planes I’d like to have many times, but since they don’t fall into the scales I prefer and there’s no kit in “my” scale, I don’t bother with them… I mean, I’d love to have a 1/48th BUFF, but I don’t see it happening, but I still don’t want the 1/72nd one…
I’m primarily a 1/48 guy. Reason being balance of the ease of adding detail and scratch building parts and the size of the finished kit. Even with an optivisor I don’t have the desire or patience to do it to anything smaller. The bigger scales are just to much money and take up to much room.
Some guys build and give away or sell. I like to keep all mine so the smaller scale is a good compromise. Even my limited armor is 1/48 but for the SA2 and the Pak 43 I just finished. Just had to have them regardless of scale.
I build primarily 1/48 aircraft. I have a few 1/35 scale armor subjects, 1/72 scale aircraft, and 1/32 scale aircraft kits. The 1/48 scale is a great compromise for me between level of detail (although, a lot of you guys amaze me with what you do with 1/72 scale kits and smaller!) and price. 98% of my stash is 1/48 aircraft, the rest a balance of the other stuff I mentioned.
For me, it’s primarily 1/48 scale aircraft…at least WWII aircraft. Once the planes started getting bigger, I decided that jets are a 1/72 scale item. Space is limited so I figure that way I can save a little.
Don’t want a 1/48th scale BUFF bad enough to pay THAT price, Yardbird… Once kits break the 45.00 mark, they better fly or I say, “thanks, but no thanks”… I don’t like jets much (Korean War-era excepted) anyway, so I can live without it, lol…
It looks like I too fall into the same catagory mostly (about 45) 1/48 aircraft kits. I have about 20 1/32 and 1/24 aircraft kits. and about 5 1/72 aircraft kits. I tend to 1/48 scale at rate 3 to every 1 1/32 scale I build. The 1/72 stuff I have is usually because I can’t find it in a bigger scale. Like everybody has said 1/48 is a good size vs detail thing.
I build almost exclusively in 1/72. The main reason is I like to build a little of everything, aircraft ships, and armor, and I like to have it all in the same scale for comparrison and diorama possibilities tho’ I have yet to do one. I can build anything from a kublewagon to a Gato class sub and everything inbetween. Until recently, this was not possible in any other scale and there are still very few ships in anything larger than 1/72. I did build a lot of other stuff when I was younger including 1/24 cars and 1/48 aircraft and I also had a long infatuation with 1/700 scale waterline ships. After doing 1/700 ships, 1/72 doesn’t seem that small. [;)]
Aww, man, the scales in my stash are all over the place. The biggest one is a 1/32 F-18 that I’m finishing up, but that will probably be the only one for the time being as I don’t have the room to display the rest of the 1/32 beasts in the closet. Looks as if the 1/72 clan is going to rule for the next little while.
I collect 1/48 scale aircraft primarily, anything that is not available in 1/48th I build in 1/72. When it comes out in 1/48th, I buy it to add to the collection. Armor I only build 1/35. Ships I prefer 1/350, but have a mix of all the Revell box scale ships and some 1/700, although they are to small for my liking.
Cars - 1/24… although I have a 1/12 Yamaha motorcycle the wife got me for my birthday.
Armor - probably a 70/15/15 split between 1/35, 1/48 and 1/72. The 1/48 Tamiya kits are REALLY nice, but the figures are pretty dang small.
Aircraft - This is probably closer to a 60/40 split between 1/72 and 1/48. Depends on the type. I can get away space wise with 1/48 WWII stuff, but most of my modern aircraft are 1/72, with a couple of notable exceptions (A-10, ES-3A, and, um… C-130J which blows my “space wise” theory out of the water).
Figures - 80/20 between 1/35 and 1/48 (matches the armor closely) with 3 Warhammer 25mm figures out there.
Ships - Easy one, split 50/50. 1/35 Tamiya PBR and 1/350 Dragon USS Bunker Hill (first command).
I’m doing 1/48 aircraft almost exclusively. My plan is to do my whole collection in the same scale so I can compare and contrast aircraft sizes across the ages. It also makes for a nice spare parts box. I picked 1/48 because it was a good medium. I very much dislike building in 1/72 scale, especially now as I’m getting older.
I still have two 1/32 unbuilt kits that I bought a long while ago, plus a Revell P-47 Razorback that I built 12+ years ago, but I don’t plan on buying any more in that scale unless it’s something I just can’t pass up.
I also have a dozen or so 1/35 armour and .mil vehicles plus some 1/24 civy vehicles, built and unbuilt. I lost my interest in them for now, but will probably come back to that at some time.
I feel the same way. If it’s not in 1/48, I don’t buy it. Even if I wanted to build a 1/72 scale B-52 or B-36, I’d have no where to keep it. I don’t think I’ll build anything bigger than a twin engine medium bomber or a modern tactical strike fighter. The only exception to this rule may be a 1/48 B-17 because it’s just such a cool aircraft. I’ll hang it over my bed or something I guess…
As most of you know I usualy stick with 1/100 scale gundam kits over in Sci-Fi. ocationaly I will build 1/144, 1/60 and very rarely, 1/200. I also have started tinkering with 1/48 scale aircraft.
I’m also primarily a 1/48 guy. I’ve always thought that it was the best compromise between size and details. But I imagine there will come a point when I’ll have to change over to 1/32 scale.
Cars, I’ll do 1/24th. That seems to be the only real size they come in.
No preferences on ships or armor (as I haven’t really done them), but I am considering doing some of those in the futue (just don’t tell the other A/C guys![;)])
I’m attracted to the sheer physical size of a model, so the smaller it is in 1:1, the larger scale I like it. And vica-versa of course. I find the larger scale a bit more forgiving, as well.
For aircraft I normally build 1/72, but have a few in 1/48, and one in 1/32. Ships are 1/700. Armor is 1/72 and 1/35. My real space models range from 1/288 to 1/32. Cars primarily 1/24-25, with some 1/20 and 1/43. I build small stuff because of space restrictions, also because the small stuff is usually cheaper-with the exception of 43rd scale cars. They’re usually 3-4 times the cost of a 1/24.
Easy…All aicraft, 1/32. I love the size and the detail. My eyes just wont do on anything smaller. My hats off to those who do “brail scale”. I dont build targets…ERR… armor. I may do some helos later on in 1/35. Ive always built large scale. I dont think Ill do 1/24. Just not interested. When I was young I built alot of 1/24 cars, but that was decades ago…Harv
In Aircraft I was exclusively 48th for the past 20 years until I was deployed overseas in 05. then on a whim I decided to do some 32nd scale aircraft again, and loved them! So Ihave made a new stash of those and have slowly started building them again. In armor it is 99% 1/35 with the rare re-issues of Monogram or Airfix 32nd scale stuff when I can find it. I have done very few ships in the past 25 years and prefer the larger 350th scale or old box scale kits there. I also some large scale (32nd and 48th) patrol craft and landing craft in the stash.
