Ok, I come to y'all with offerings of kindness & a question.

Well of coarse there would have to a catch.[:D] Heres the deal. I am working on Accurate Minatures Dauntless SB3 of coarse I know pretty much nothing about planes and figured I would buildit for the armor side plane build but mainly cause I got it for free. Question is , the dash in it is a clear part and the instructions say to paint it flat black with clear gauges and to put black decals behind the gauges. So am I wrong in believing that I need to try to mask those tiny gauges and then put black behind them? Sounds kind of pointless to me but , y’all are the experts on this one. Please enlighten me.

Chris,
Good luck with your Dauntless -
I’ve got a bunch of those AM planes (they’re great) and the best way to do the instrument panels is to drop a little dot of masking agent on the instrument face - something like white glue, Humbrol Liquid Mask, and I’ve even used one of those Avon peel off face mask things that my wife has. They all worked.
Then spray the panel, and when it’s dry, use a toothpick or the point of a number 11 blade and pick out the mask - and you’re done!
Good luck, mate.

Ahem, gentlemen, if you will, I shall field this one. On Accurate Miniatures instrument panels, you will see engraved the glass that would cover the instruments. Simply take a dab of liquid masking goo and cover these little indented circles. Paint the “dash” a color that is just a hair less black than the inside of a cow. Then, take the decal of the instruments, wet it, rub the back of it across the back of the instrument panel to spread some stickum on it, and then apply it face down, so the black, white and red of the instrument faces show through those little circles you just masked. It’s really not nearly as involved as it sounds, and it looks just like an instrument panel after you paint the switches and levers yellow, red and metalic on the front. Check photos of an SBD panel on a site for which I’m sure one of my winged colleagues will supply you the link.
(These Treadheads…sheesh.)

Ok, I think it’s starting to come together now. Just wondering though sharkskin, do you happen to have a reference pic of the inside of a cow, not sure I know the exact shade of black that would be. [:D]

Dark Black should do the trick…

Fade to …uh… well… Black…

How much difference is there between dark black, medium black and medium dark black? Is a primer necessary for these colours?

Only modelers would have a discussion about different shades of black!! Proofread my post and it made me laugh and think about it.

Well, Roadkill, Medium Black isn’t quite as dark as Dark Black and Light Black isn’t quite as dark as Medium Black, kinda like any other color.

The only time you need to use a primer is if you want to put any of these three standard blacks over any of the three standard whites, which are:

Dark White, Medium White and Light White.

Don’t ask me the difference between the whites though, because after mixing all of this up in my head, it all kinda looks gray to me…

Fade to Plaid…

But … keep in mind that the color of the primer can affect the color of the final coat, so what started out as medium black might wind up as dark black or light black or what started out as light black might wind up as dark black or even gray.

Guess we’ll have to wait for WhiteWolf to show up and answer that one!

Fade to Plaid…

Yea, ok well I think from now on I will just stay over in the armor forum. Things tend to stay a bit more simpler over there. [%-)]

now this is a great modeling discussion. btw what about off black, or faded black,

joe

And then there’s the different sheens of black: flat, semi-gloss and gloss… Does any one want to bring out the FS listing yet? [:D]

Speaking of AM models… Does anyone have ANY color pics of a TBF-1C Instrument Panel? Please? Maybe Swanny or Pix can help me out here… [;)]

P.S. Chris, you got it for free?!?

Well, simplicity is a plus with that crowd… [;)]

Fade to Black…

Jeez, all I had in mind was something like RLM 66, which should be in the lexicon of Treadheads. It’s what I use on some panels if I need contrast. Unless its one of those crazy navy or X-plane panels that are gull gray, but we’ve been though all that recently.

My head hurts

Dont’ forget my favorite shade of black which I use on tires: Grimy black.

Shrikes- Yup, I got the kit for free. Never got a armor kit for free. Must mean they are worth more. [:D]

Thanks for the tips. Y’all are’nt half as bad as Joe said you were. I think I even found a pic of how I might try to do this thing, has all the things I like doing. battle damage, mud, dirt, grime all the the things that make a model look nice.
